On this topic of Chapter #2, Marcela Rios, doula and breastfeeding counselor, talks about the strength and persistence needed to overcome pain and latch issues during breastfeeding

Finding Comfort in Nursing

For a long time, it has been repeated that breastfeeding hurts, and those who breastfeed would have to endure the pain for the sake of baby's nutrition. Fortunately, today we know that pain is a sign that something needs to be adjusted, corrected, or solved, and despite being common, feeling pain while breastfeeding is not normal. Breastfeeding a baby can be uncomfortable at the beginning of the journey and during the first minutes of feedings. However, to feel pain throughout the entire feeding and/or to have pain lasting for weeks during feedings may require support from a lactation consultant or a specialist doctor. Breastfeeding should be a pleasant experience for both mom and baby.

One of the main reasons for pain while breastfeeding is a poor latch. This can happen for several reasons: the baby's position while nursing, a baby who doesn't open their mouth wide enough, engorged breasts (very full), babies with nipple confusion (babies who use pacifiers, bottles, or nipple shields), muscle tension in the baby's face, and a tongue tie. Often, when the latch is not corrected soon enough, the nipples begin to develop cracks and wounds, which will only heal when the latch is corrected, despite the comfort that ointments, compresses, and others can bring. In addition to the latch, there are other reasons that can cause pain while breastfeeding, such as breast thrush (candida), clogged milk ducts, and Raynaud's phenomenon of the nipple (vasospasm).

For all these challenges faced during breastfeeding, count on a breastfeeding consultant. The sooner, the better. Additionally, educate yourself about breastfeeding yet during pregnancy, information can save your journey and make it more enjoyable.

Last but not least, have a support network (if possible, plan for it before the baby arrives). As the African proverb says,

"It takes a village to raise a child."
